Summer 2008 First Year Student To-Do List

Welcome H&SS Class of 2012! This is your Summer 2008 academic "To-Do" list. Start with Item 1 and work in order through Item 6.

Some items entail reading information, and others require that you both read information and then complete a task -- we cannot stress enough that when materials are presented along the way, you must carefully read them before continuing.

Again, please work through the following items in order:

  1. Disability Services: To be eligible for disability-related services on campus, students are responsible for identifying themselves and disclosing information about the disability through completion of CMU's Voluntary Disclosure of a Disability Form.

  2. English Placement Test: First year students who are non-native English speakers are required to take an online placement test. The linked PDF explains how a non-native English speaker is defined and how to complete the placement test.

  3. Do I Need To Take Calculus?: Read this to find out if you need to complete Item 5 (Calculus Placement Test).

  4. Calculus Placement Test Directions: If you are required to take the calculus placement test (as per the previous item), you must complete it online and email your AAC advisor when you have completed it. The linked PDF contains specific instructions on how to access the placement test.

  5. Modern Languages Placement Test: This placement test is for students who wish to take a foreign language and who have had prior experience with that language (have spoken it or read it to any degree at home, have taken lessons or classes, etc). An online test is available in French, German, Russian, and Spanish. Students who wish to be placed in Chinese, Italian, or Japanese should contact the appropriate advisor (follow the link for details). Students who have had NO previous experience in a language may elect to take the first elementary level course in that language.

  6. Computer Science Placement Test: This placement test will be used to help determine if you are prepared to take a course that requires 15-100 as a pre-requisite, even though you do not have credit for that course. If you plan to take 15-100, you do NOT need to take this exam. ONLY take this placement IF you wish to take 15-111 WITHOUT taking 15-100.
