Meet the H&SS Academic Advisory Center Staff

The H&SS AAC advisors and departmental major advisors share a common goal of helping you be successful in your time here at Carnegie Mellon, and beyond. Don't hesitate to take advantage of our services. AAC advisors are the primary advising resource for all H&SS students. Once you've declared a major, we will continue to work with you on all H&SS requirements, policies, and deadlines. We encourage all students to meet both with us and their departmental major advisor on a regular basis.

When you enter H&SS, we assign you to one of our AAC advisors. Although it's best to make an appointment when you need to see your advisor, it's often possible to see him or her on a walk-in basis. You may use email for general questions, but we encourage you to meet one-on-one with your advisor on a regular basis.

Joseph Devine is both an associate dean of H&SS and the director of the Academic Advisory Center. He advises the Student-Defined Major Program, students in the Science and Humanities Scholars program, and directs the university's Prelaw Advising Program.

"Shortly after college and very early in my career, I lucked out and got my first teaching job in southern Switzerland. During the day, I could always stop, look around and find an Alp or two for a moment's contemplation, and they slowly cast quite a spell. I still think of the mountains, often, and of the importance they taught me of reflection, of putting the 'small stuff' down below into proper perspective, and of the uplifting sense of broadening horizons that they evoke. Interestingly, these sentiments have become important to me in my philosophy of academic advising, and become a central part of what I try to do with each student whom I advise. It's a valuable set of lessons. I hope I've managed to pass it along to at least a few students along the way."

Debby Gerhardt is the assistant director of the Academic Advisory Center. She advises undeclared students and all students who transfer to H&SS from outside of Carnegie Mellon.

"While at Rutgers University, I spent my undergraduate years studying urban elementary education. For three years I taught 'inner city' high school and adult students before moving to Pittsburgh. I have been working in the AAC since 1982. Currently, I am working on my M.Ed. in Adult Education at Penn State University. 'Life-long learning' is an interest and commitment in education that I have been developing."

"Hello! I’m Kimberlee Eberle an Academic Advisor with the H&SS Academic Advising center. This means it is my responsibility to help you develop as a student during your time at Carnegie Mellon. I have a great deal of experience directing students toward achievement of their goals; primarily because of the winding path I have taken.

I started my academic career at a small liberal arts college, Wittenberg University, where I majored in Creative Writing with a focus on Poetry. It was through this experience that I gained an appreciation for the learning process, as I changed majors at least 7 times. I had become very involved in campus programs while at Wittenberg and therefore decided go to graduate school at the University of Kansas to learn more about student development as well as the programs that support this process. During my time in Kansas, I held internships in several student focused areas, such as International Student Services, Residential Life, Admissions, Disability Resources, and Academic Advising. It was because of these experiences that I was able to have an internship with the Universidad de San Francisco in Quito, Ecuador. While in Ecuador, I not only solidified my knowledge of the Spanish language, but also, I learned what is like to be an international student as well as how to create programs to help in the transition to a new environment.

During my time here at Carnegie Mellon, I have found it to be a truly wonderful place to be; it has so many available resources and opportunities. I am here to help you make the best of your time at Carnegie Mellon and to answer any questions that you may have."

"My interest in a career in higher education bloomed when I was an undergraduate student. I was (and still am) enamored with the learning process, but I was also very engaged in the co-curricular opportunities available on my campus. In my senior year I decided to deviate from my original occupational plans and apply to graduate programs that prepare their students for administrative and student affairs positions on campus.

While a graduate student, I had opportunities to work both in residence life and in admissions, giving me a broad range of experiences. After graduate school I worked in a Freshman Program Office as a Coordinator of Student Services while also providing academic advising to undergraduates. I was promoted to Assistant Director and was given the opportunity to coordinate registration, peer leadership opportunities, and academic advising.

After some time away from higher education, I am happy to return to the role as student advisor. I have found the Carnegie Mellon H&SS students to be more kind, responsible, and invested than any other group of students with whom I have previously worked."
