Relationship between H&SS Honors and SURG ProgramsWhile you are perhaps aware of the Carnegie Mellon's Small Undergraduate Research Grant (SURG) program, it is mentioned here because it has special relevance and timeliness for juniors contemplating H&SS Senior Honors projects. This program awards grants to undergraduates for research in all academic fields. The grants are awarded competitively, based on proposals submitted by students. One person projects are eligible for up to $500. There are three grant periods each year: Fall, Spring and Summer. Juniors contemplating participation in the H&SS Senior Honors Program should consider applying for a SURG if their Honors project would benefit from this kind of financial support. In addition, the SURG application process (which requires students to define and articulate project objectives, methods, faculty advisor, etc.) is very similar to the Honors Program application process. Clearly, these processes are mutually reinforcing and beneficial. Students are therefore urged to visit the Undergraduate Research Office web site (which has detailed program guidelines and application forms), for more information about the SURG program.
